General Position Description:
The Community Health Worker/Community Health Advocate works under the direction of the Program/Project Manager for the Maternal and Child Health program. He/she provides in-home education on various prenatal topics and early childhood development issues, which pertain to the Health Start program's goals and objectives. In addition to being an educator, the CHW/CHA is also a liaison to other resources and services within the community.
Overall Position Responsibilities:
- Regularly visit clients in their homes during their pregnancy and up to two years postpartum.
- Educate about premature labor warning signs, prenatal nutrition, exercise, the benefits of breastfeeding, and other pregnancy related issues.
- Advocate for early and continuous prenatal care.
- Provide basic family planning education and administer pregnancy tests if needed.
- Educate about developmental milestones for infants/children and encourage positive parenting skills.
- Promote childhood immunizations, adequate nutrition, and other preventative health care issues for children.
- Educate and advocate for proper car seat use and installment.
- Encourage enrollment in early childhood education programs.
- Educate, refer, and assist clients with applications and enrollment in community resources.
- Possess basic knowledge of the community and its population.
- Reinforce and support traditional cultural practices and beliefs.
- Serve as a positive role model for pregnant women and mothers in the community.
- Be a proactive, self-motivated family health advocate who enjoys working with people.
- Complete the training course and attend regular in-service programs.
- Complete reports and paperwork as required by the program.
- Work with other team members to accomplish program objectives.
- Comply with confidentiality rules and laws.
Minimum Qualifications/Skills & Abilities:
- High School Diploma required, some college preferred.
- Knowledge about the community where the Health Start services will be provided required.
- Experience in health or human services preferred.
- Experience in Maternal and Child Health preferred.
- Must exhibit culturally sensitive and appropriate behavior.
- Must possess a valid AZ driver's license and be willing to travel in personal vehicle (mileage is reimbursed at the state rate which is currently $0.445 per mile).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) ability preferred and in some target areas may be required.
Pay Amount
$17.36-$18.35
