Description
Under the direction of the CFO, the Controller manages the organization's accounting function and assigned financial activities. They are responsible for financial reporting, the system of internal controls, compliance (including compliance with GAAP), grant accounting, the monthly accounting close, accounting services oversight (payroll and accounts payable), coordination of annual audit with outside auditors, adherence to applicable finance policies, and the career development and coaching of their assigned team members. The Controller also provides financial information and insight to stakeholders and leadership. This position is a Director Level Controller, and may have up to 7 direct reports. The ideal candidate will have the drive, skills, and abilities for mentorship to the CFO level.
Duties
- Oversee and manage comprehensive accounting operations, including the meticulous handling of accounting records, monthly financial closings, grant accounting, and ensuring the timely completion of balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.
- Prepare, analyze, and present a variety of financial reports, including internal management reports, governance reporting, compliance reports, and financial institution reports, providing insights and recommendations to support decision-making and organizational objectives.
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls and accounting policies in collaboration with the CFO, ensuring a strong framework to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure accurate and transparent reporting of assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenditures in accordance with GAAP or other regulatory requirements.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team, establishing clear performance goals and objectives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and providing guidance and support as needed to ensure the effective and efficient completion of daily operations.
- Assist with the preparation and review of grant budgets, ensuring alignment with the funding requirements and organizational goals, and providing ongoing support throughout the grant application and reporting process to maximize funding opportunities.
- Lead the preparation and review of the Annual 990 tax filing, ensuring compliance with IRS regulations, tax laws, and organizational policies, while providing strategic advice on tax-saving opportunities and reporting implications.
- Coordinate and prepare financial information for annual reports, including Medicare, AHCCCS reconciliation, and UDS, ensuring compliance with all relevant health care and governmental reporting standards, and contributing to transparency and accountability in public reporting.
- Manage fixed asset accounting processes, including overseeing the recording of additions, deletions, and adjustments, and ensuring that depreciation schedules are accurately maintained and reconciled with year-end financial statements, contributing to accurate financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with lease accounting standards under ASC 842, providing guidance and oversight for the proper treatment of lease agreements, reviewing and managing lease classifications, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting in accordance with industry best practices.
- Support pharmacy inventory accounting and physical controls, collaborating with the pharmacy department to maintain accurate inventory records, establish strong internal controls, and ensure proper documentation and procedures are followed for compliance and audit readiness.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments, including finance, operations, and executive leadership, to ensure financial information is aligned with strategic initiatives, and provide financial insight to drive operational efficiencies and enhance performance across the organization.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the accounting department, identifying opportunities for process optimization, automation, and efficiency enhancements, ensuring the department operates at its highest potential.
- Support organizational audits by preparing documentation, providing explanations for financial results, and collaborating with external auditors to ensure the timely and successful completion of audits with no significant findings.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 5 years' related experience in an equivalent role.
- Master's degree in business, accounting, or a related field preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
- Experience in healthcare and/or Federally Qualified Health Care experience preferred.
- Experience working for a non-profit preferred.
Compensation
$100,000 to 130,000/yr
